Introduction to MTD

What is changing? From April 2026, Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax Self Assessment (ITSA) will come into effect for many sole traders and landlords. This is part of HMRC’s plan to modernise tax reporting and reduce errors. Who will need to follow MTD rules from 2026? ✔️ Sole traders and landlords with a total turnover over £50,000 will need to follow MTD rules from April 2026. ✔️ If your total income is between £30,000 and £50,000, you will need to follow MTD rules from April 2027.

What will you need to do under MTD making tax digital  ITSA?

✅ Keep digital records of your income and expenses using MTD-compatible software
✅ Send quarterly updates to HMRC showing your business income and expenses every three months
✅ Submit an End of Period Statement (EOPS) at the end of the tax year to finalise your business income
✅ Submit a Final Declaration to confirm your total income and tax due (this will replace your current Self Assessment tax return)dd a description about this item

Key facts for sole traders

  • Start date: April 2026 for turnover over £50,000; April 2027 for £30,000–£50,000
     
  • Quarterly submissions: Due every three months via MTD-compatible software
     
  • Annual submissions: EOPS and Final Declaration will still be required to finalise your tax
     
  • Software required: You cannot submit through HMRC’s online Self Assessment portal; MTD-compatible software is mandatory
     
  • Penalties: A points-based system will apply for late submissions

What is involved in MTD

 

Under Making Tax Digital, digital bookkeeping means keeping all your business records in a digital format using MTD-compatible software. This includes:

  • Recording your daily sales and income accurately within your software
     
  • Recording business expenses as they occur, categorising them properly
     
  • Using bank feeds, where your business bank account transactions feed directly into your software for easy matching and reconciliation
     
  • Storing digital copies of receipts and invoices, either by scanning paper receipts or uploading electronic ones
     
  • Ensuring all records are kept up to date regularly, not just at year end, to enable accurate quarterly submissions to HMRC
     

Tip: Many software providers offer mobile apps, so you can snap photos of receipts and record expenses
